If you specifically want that warm, traditional amber tone, oil-based polyurethane can be the right choice. However, for coastal Newcastle homes with good natural light, water-based products generally deliver a more predictable, longer-lasting result.
Hardwax Oils
Hardwax oils (such as Rubio Monocoat or Osmo) have gained popularity for their natural, matte aesthetic. They penetrate the timber rather than sitting on top, creating a more organic feel.
Advantages: Very natural look and feel. Easy spot-repair capability. Low VOC and environmentally friendly. No visible coating layer - the timber feels like timber.
